Firefighting
Artist Statement
It takes a special kind of person to overcome the natural instinct to save oneself. For many in the first responder roll, they are altruistic, the saintly sacrifice to save others from harm.
I have seen how an unimaginable evil event can ripple through innocent lives and families of those responders. I have seen how the hurt can create a chasm that takes years to begin to shift through. I have also seen how love can stretch beyond the endurance of the living world. The unexpected loss of someone of such significance in our life gets applied to everything. There is no moment, no event, where the loss does not touch.
This painting series is an exploration of admiration and grief for the profession.
Lieutenant Peter Louis Freund, Fire Department of New York, Engine Company 55.
Perished in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001.
